The Maritime Museum of Crete participated in the work of the 21st Education and Modern Greek Cultural Heritage Information Meeting organized by the Directorate of Modern Cultural Heritage in collaboration with the Greek section of the International Council of Museums (ICOM), on “Experiments: Performing Arts at the Museum ”, at the Ministry of Culture on Friday, November 01, 2019, where the new educational program of the museum entitled” The Adventures of Odysseus “was presented.
Since 1996, when the training programs were first organized at the Maritime Museum of Crete, their main aim has been to disseminate Maritime History and Tradition. The sea has played a very important role in human life since ancient times. Greek culture reached the end of the then-known cosmopolitan, because of its sailing. Promoting this nautical life is also one of the aims of the Maritime Museum of Crete. For this reason, this educational program was designed, as the Odyssey, through Odysseus’ maritime travels, is a story worth telling to our little visitors.
It is a new program in the premises of the Maritime Museum of Crete, which is mainly aimed at students of the 3rd and 5th grade of the elementary school. Through role-playing games and following Odysseus in his adventures, students who follow the program are invited to come into contact with Odysseus’ adventures after Troy’s fall, in a chronological, experiential way, as if they were part of his crew, or even Odysseus himself. The purpose of the program is for students to understand that Odysseus’ adventures are a hymn to the adventurous sailors of antiquity and that he himself is a symbol of dedication and struggle to achieve goals.
