Welcome

The Maritime Museum of Crete welcomes you to its website. Here you will find all the necessary information for your visit, the reports and activities of the museum.

Firkas Fortress

On the northwest side of the port of the city of Chania, the Venetians built the Revellino del Porto, a fortification for the protection of the port. Today the main building of the fortress housed the main number of the reports of the maritime Museum of Crete. The two floors of the museum will navigate the naval history of Crete and Greece.

Neorio Moro

In 1467, it was ordered by the most Serene Republic of Venice for the creation of the neorion at the port of Chania for the repair of ships. In 1593 had already built sixteen dockyards. In 1607 started the construction of a Shipyard Moro. Since then they have served different purposes. Today, one of them hosts the Permanent Exhibition of Ancient and Traditional Shipbuilding of the maritime Museum of Crete.

Maritime Museum Of Crete

At the entrance of the port of Chania is the Fortress ΦΙΡΚΑ which was built by the Venetians (1204-1669). At the entrance of the Fortress this is the Nautical Museum of Crete was founded to house and preserve the Maritime traditions and, in particular, of Crete, which have been the source of National Survival…

Permanent Exhibition Of Ancient & Traditional Shipbuilding

An important step in the development of the Museum is the concession from the MINISTRY of culture of one of the Venetian Shipyards of Moro in the heart of the old port of Chania for the creation of a permanent exhibition. There was partial restoration of the Neorion with the assistance of organisations and individuals who responded to an appeal of the Museum.
