Purpose – Design
The purpose of this experimental voyage was to prove that the hull resulting from the construction was not only beautiful and seaworthy so as to be tested in practice the correctness of the research approach.
The design was made with the data of the time of the Minoans
– Sailing only during the day and only close to the coast
– During travel, 29 May – 24 June 2004 days πλεύσιμες 10
– A total distance of 210 n.m.
– Weather: Wind of up to 3 beaufort
Execution
The crew of the vessel, formed by 24 volunteers (young people) mainly of the island of Crete. Set up 2 crews in order to alternate between the intermediate stations.
After the necessary training of the crew, the ship sailed from the port of Chania on the 29 May 2004.
The departure was a victory and a crowd of people with various events say goodbye to the MINOA while many vessels were escorting in the first path. The hardest part of the route was Here – Antikythira – Kythira – Monemvasia.
The intermediate stations, the inhabitants received a warm welcome, staged events in honor of the crew, and hosted the crew with the offer of nights. The Navy had been allocated as a ship convoy , on all routes on a minesweeper.
Results
a. The crew responded perfectly to the task of proving the power of soul and body.
b. The ship is up to it even in adverse weather conditions confirming the correctness of the experimental shipbuilding approach.
c. Achieved an average speed of rowing 2.4 mr With oars and sail 3.2 mr. Thus was completed the program of reconstruction of the Minoan ship after intervening in a series of phases: Study – Theoretical documentation – Construction – Practice documentation (experimental sailing).
