It is with great pleasure and honor for us that on Saturday, September 14, 2024 at 11:00 a.m., the opening of our philatelic exhibition on the subject of “NAVIGATION – NAVIGAZIONE” will be held at the Postal and Telegraphical Museum of Mitteleurope in Trieste, Italy. Co-organization: Hellenic Foundation for Culture in Trieste, Italy, (Fondazione Ellenica di Cultura – Italia, Trieste), Italian Post Office (Poste Italiane) with the Postal and Telegraphical Museum of Mitteleurope (Museo Postale e Telegrafico della Mitteleuropa) and the Maritime Museum of Crete. Under the auspices of: Honorary Consulate General in Trieste, Italy (Consolato Generali di Grecia), Honorary Consulate of Cyprus in Italy (Consolato di Cipro) and Greek Orthodox Community of Italy (Comunità Greco Orientale). The exhibition will remain until October 12, 2024.
The philatelic exhibition on the theme of “Navigation”, which will be presented, is part of the philatelic collection of the Maritime Museum of Crete, which has been developing in recent years. In 2010, the first stamp exhibition was held in our Museum with the theme “Lighthouses of the World” and since then the formation of philatelic collections began. Over time, it was decided to divide the stamps into thematic sections to enrich the collections. As a result, thematic collections with a large number of stamps have been created, which are constantly supplemented, such as Navigation, the Battle of Crete, the Cretan State, the Marine Environment, the Lighthouses of the world, Christianity, etc.
The titles, which are chosen for our exhibitions, are comprehensive but also convey in the best possible way the theme of the exhibition. The term Navigation is used in the naval and maritime field usually with the following three meanings: 1. As Science, Technique, 2. As Realization of ships and 3. As Class of ships. The series of stamps, which will be exhibited, harmonize with these three basic categories.
This exhibition is part of the Museum’s permanent collection on the subject of “Navigation”, which is exhibited both in the main area and in the area of the MORO Shipyard – Permanent Exhibition of Ancient and Traditional Shipbuilding.
For its presentation at the Postal and Telegraphical Museum of Mitteleurope in Trieste, Italy, the exhibition is set up from scratch and consists of stamps, commemorative series of stamps, personal stamp sheets, Stamp Albums, Commemorative Sheets, Fayettes, “Maximum Prepaid” Cards, First Day Circulation Folders (F.P.H.C.) from around the world in approximately 200 tabs (we send you samples in electronic format), which will be placed for display and display in the windows.
Each tab has been edited and created so that each philatelic material (stamp, page, leaflet, card) after being framed with a black background and laminated, can be viewed with captions for both the material itself and the date and title of issue. Also, additional philatelic material will be placed in the mobile showcases, continuation of the exhibition.
The wealth of historical information provided in the stamp series is remarkable, as we meet great explorers and navigators throughout the centuries, such as Christopher Columbus (1451-1506), James Cook (1728-1779), Ferdinand Magellan (1480-1521 ), Vasco da Gama (1460-1524) etc. Works by important painters such as the Dutch Willem van de Velde the younger (1636-1672) or the British Richard Wright (1723-1775), depicting important naval battles that changed the course of history. Also, with the stamp series and philatelic products in general from around the world it is possible to find information and details about many historical ships and events. States and smaller island complexes with a rich philatelic production, arouse our curiosity and challenge us to learn certain things both about the subject of the philatelic material they have issued, and about their geographical location and also about their culture.
The establishment and promotion of the Philatelic exhibition on the subject of “Navigation”, which will be hosted at the Postal and Telegraphical Museum of Mitteleurope in Trieste, Italy in collaboration with the Hellenic Foundation for Culture in Trieste, Italy, and the Italian Post Office, we hope that it will once again offer to common historical elements as well as elements of culture, which derive.
Finally, with our frequent presence in Trieste and the organization of exhibitions on various topics, we have made new strong friendships, which make it possible to feel Trieste as our own place. We sincerely thank the Director of the Hellenic Foundation for Culture in Trieste, Italy, Ms. Aliki Kefalogianni but also in the person of Mrs. Emmanuella de Domenico the Italian Post Office and especially the Postal and Telegraphic Museum of Central Europe for their undivided trust in making the exhibition possible.
