The Maritime Museum of Crete, within the framework of the excellent relations that have developed in recent years with Cretans of the diaspora around the world, once again participated this year in the activities of the World Council of Cretans in Crete.
Initially, we took part in the Council’s annual conference on Saturday, 2 August 2025, which was held at the “Theomitor” Centre for Social and Cultural Ministry in Rethymno.
On Sunday, 3 August 2025, we had the honour and pleasure of welcoming to the Maritime Museum of Crete the President and members of the World Council of Cretans, in a gathering with Cretans from all over the world. Cretans from Australia, New Zealand, America, and Europe visited our museum, were given a guided tour of our premises, and engaged in discussions on particularly important historical issues, such as the Battle of Crete, as well as social topics regarding the presence of Cretans in various parts of the world and the transmission of Crete’s cultural heritage beyond the borders of Greece. Following the conclusion of the visit, a customary exchange of gifts took place, and traditional delicacies were offered.
On Friday, 8 August 2025, another visit of the World Council of Cretans to our premises took place, this time at the Neorio Moro – Permanent Exhibition of Ancient and Traditional Shipbuilding. Following the guided tour of the venue, a walk along the breakwater of the Venetian Harbour of Chania commenced under the light of the August sunset, with a stop at the chapel of Saint Nicholas of the Mole and a final destination at the Lighthouse of Chania, including its interior.
We look forward to participating in the 2026 conference, which will be held at the Orthodox Academy of Crete in Chania!
Warm congratulations to the President and members of the World Council of Cretans for their tireless efforts in promoting and transmitting the cultural heritage and traditions of Crete throughout the world!
