In the context of the excellent relations between the Maritime Museum of Crete and the Aikaterinis Laskaridis foundation, Mr. Panos Laskaridis, recognizing our work and the effort to promote Naval History, was kind enough to make available to us for viewing an excellent painting by Emilios Prosalenis. This sea painting “Sailboat in the Open Sea”, Oil painting on canvas, 84 X 109 cm. (120.5 X 144 cm. including the frame), will remain in our Museum until the end of the year. The painting is already on display in a central area of the museum and is displayed in the best possible way. We are especially happy and thank the Aikaterinis Laskaridis Foundation, the Admiral Mr. Panos Laskaridis, as well as the Director General of the Foundation Honorary Fleet Commander Vice-Admiral Konstantinos Mazarakis-Ainian Η.N. ret. and we hope for similar cooperation in the near future.
A few words about the painter
Emilios Prosalendis (Corfu 1859 – Athens 1926)
He was the son of the painter Spyridon and the grandson of the sculptor Pavlos Prosalentis. He occupied himself with oil painting and was famous mainly for his watercolors, shaping together with Angelos Giallinas (1857-1939) and Vikentios Bokatsiabis (1856-1933) a tradition of this technique in Corfu. He took his first painting lessons from his father and then went to Paris, where he studied engineering. Returning to Greece he served as an engineer officer in the Navy, depicting various ports and daily life on a warship. Sea paintings, illustrations of historical events from various wars, mainly naval battles and depictions of archaeological sites and monuments were the main subjects of his artistic production. His works are in various galleries in Greece and abroad.
