On Thursday, October 31, 2024, we had the pleasure of hosting at the Maritime Museum of Crete, Neorio MORO “Permanent Exhibition of Ancient and Traditional Shipbuilding” a very interesting public discussion on the topic “On the Capes of Homer: The Hospitality of the Sea in Culture and Development and the Challenges of Today”
This interesting discussion was held by Europe Direct of the Region of Crete on the occasion of the European Sea Days. Researchers discussed with the public the effects of climate change on Mediterranean monuments, with an emphasis on the negative effects on cultural heritage located in ports. In the context of the action, the two European projects implemented by the Region of Crete and related to Blue development, “INNOVABLUE” and “OCEANIDS” were presented.
The meeting discussed how climate change affects Mediterranean ports, what is its impact on cultural and natural heritage monuments, the resilience of this heritage to rapidly changing climate events, as well as an introduction to scientific and European projects that strengthen in the development of solutions and technologies towards a sustainable Blue Economy.
The particularly important topics discussed were climate change and how it affects the cultural monuments in the Mediterranean ports: the case of Crete. The Impact of Climate Change on Cultural and Natural Heritage Sites in the Mediterranean and the Resilience of Cultural Heritage to Climate Events in Space: Post-Project Results and Progress. Geoinformatics and Cultural Heritage, Opportunities for Development and Evolution at Sea: The European Projects OCEANIDS and INNOVABLUE of the Region of Crete and the impact of climate change on the coastal zone in Europe and Greece through the eyes of OCEANIDS, INNOVABLUE – Innovation Network for the Development of Solutions and Technologies towards a Sustainable Blue Economy.
The issue of the Climate Crisis and how it affects the seas, the coastal zones and the cultural heritage that exists is important and what is required is organized and scientifically documented collective action to deal with the problem. The main objectives of the Maritime Museum of Crete are the promotion and preservation of the Maritime Tradition and History of our Land and movements of this kind are very important, as with the help and contribution of all of us, the protection of the monuments in the coastal zones to preserve our Cultural Heritage. Finally, with our participation in this particular day, a process of continuous communication with Europe Direct for the organization of actions mainly focused on the special issue of climate change and its effects on the cultural monuments of the coastal regions begins.
