The Maritime Museum of Crete had the great pleasure and honour to participate in the events of Greek Maritime Week, 2025, a historic institution revived 17 years after the last Greek Maritime Week held in 2008.
On Friday, 4 July 2025 at 10:30 a.m., a guided tour took place of the philatelic exhibitions titled “Lighthouses of the World” and “Navigation”, hosted at the Neorio Moro – Permanent Exhibition of Ancient and Traditional Shipbuilding. The philatelic materials on display are part of the wider collections of the Nautical Museum of Crete and belong to its series of travelling exhibitions. The “Lighthouses of the World” exhibition was previously presented at the Santorini Maritime Museum, while the “Navigation” exhibition was first hosted in Trieste, at the Postal and Telegraphical Museum of Mitteleurope, and later in Ljubljana, at the Headquarters of the Slovenian Postal Service.
The visit continued with a guided walking tour along the breakwater of the Venetian Harbour of Chania, with an intermediate stop at the Chapel of Saint Nicholas of the Mole, and final destination the lighthouse, where participants had the opportunity to visit its interior. During the tour, information was provided on the operation of lighthouses, accompanied by a brief historical overview of the Venetian period in Chania.
We are confident that the revival of Greek Maritime Week 2025 in Chania marks a new beginning for the promotion of the glorious history of our Hellenic Navy.
For our part, as the Maritime Museum of Crete, we will continue our efforts to highlight and promote our naval tradition and the history of our region, through initiatives both in Greece and abroad.
