The Μaritime Museum of Crete, represented by its Chairman and members of the Board of Directors, participated with great pleasure and honour in the 14th Panhellenic Conference of Maritime Museums, held in Piraeus on 24–25 April 2026. The Conference was successfully organised by the Hellenic Maritime Museum, under the auspices of the Greek Ministry of Culture.
The institution of the Panhellenic Conferences of Maritime Museums, established in 1996 with the first conference held in Chania at the initiative of the Maritime Museum of Crete, constitutes the only collective action uniting these specialised museums across Greece. The aim of these conferences is to foster networking and strengthen collaboration among Greek maritime museums, with a view to shaping a common cultural policy in the fields of research, preservation, and promotion of maritime history and heritage.
In addition to museums, the conferences bring together organisations and institutions dedicated to maritime heritage, which present their cultural activities. At the same time, each conference focuses on a specific thematic subject related to maritime history and cultural tradition. This year’s conference, under the theme “From the Past to the Present: Contemporary Museum Practices in the Presentation of Maritime Cultural Heritage,” highlighted the role of maritime museums in the modern era and the need to redefine their relationship with the public.
Participants presented the work carried out by museums and institutions and had the opportunity to reflect on the challenges they face, expressing the shared aspiration that, with the same dedication and passion, they will continue their demanding yet rewarding mission of preserving and promoting maritime history and tradition. It was also agreed that the 15th Panhellenic Conference of Maritime Museums will be held in 2028 at the Museum of Shipbuilding and Maritime Arts of the Aegean in Samos.
