The Maritime Museum of Crete actively participated in the 11th International Conference entitled “Education and Culture in the 21st Century”, held on 25–26 April 2026 at the Ralleio School in Piraeus. The conference was co-organized by the Museum of School Life and Education of EKEDISY and the Pedagogical Society of Greece, in collaboration with the Department of Tourism Management of the University of Patras and the Glinos Foundation, under the auspices of the Ministry of Education, Religious Affairs and Sports and the University of Patras.
The aim of the conference was to highlight contemporary educational, pedagogical, and museological approaches, as well as to strengthen collaboration among educational institutions, researchers, and cultural organizations. Its thematic scope covered a wide range of fields, including museum education, educational programmes, the use of new technologies, and the interconnection between culture and education.
Within the framework of the conference proceedings, a paper was presented by specialized member of the Museum’s staff responsible for educational programmes, entitled: “Educational Programmes at the Maritime Museum of Crete: Museum Education, Maritime Heritage, and Sustainable Development in the 21st Century”. The presentation highlighted the role of maritime museums in contemporary educational practice and their contribution to the dissemination of maritime cultural heritage.
Particular emphasis was placed on the museum education practices implemented at the Museum, as well as on the integration of historical knowledge with experiential and interactive forms of learning. The participation of the Maritime Museum of Crete in the conference forms part of its ongoing commitment to outreach, academic collaboration, and active contribution to the dialogue on the role of museums in the 21st century.
